In 1985, the designers of the Minsk automobile plant faced the task of creating a reliable working machine that could be operated in bad weather and in extreme temperatures.

In most modern Maz 5551, the technical characteristics differ from those of the first model. The engine from the Yaroslavl engine plant has undergone several modifications, which allowed it to reach the Euro-2 standard, and later Euro-3.

The latest Maz 5551 is already produced with a more advanced Cummins engine, which fits the Euro-4 standard and is supplemented with a turbocharger. As a result, a reliable dump truck, working without breaking at any available speeds, has become even more powerful than before.

Hydraulics and transmission Maz 5551

• The hydraulic system is extremely simple and consists of a pump and a three-stage telescopic hydraulic cylinder, due to the latter, the body is overturned.
• Thanks to the hydraulic system, the steering wheel in the car is with power steering. This has a positive effect on the comfort of the driver and the maneuverability of the car.
• The transmission sometimes upsets drivers, because sometimes in first gear there are problems with the start of movement and acceleration from scratch. However, this can only be noticed when the body is fully loaded. With the observance of the average speed mode, the car goes smoothly, without dips in speed, accelerates well.
• Since in the latest updated versions of the model improvements were made in the mechanism of switching from the lever to the manual transmission, it became somewhat easier to drive the dump truck.

Electrical system

Perhaps this is the only technical characteristic of Maz 5551, according to which it loses to improved dump trucks from other manufacturers. The fact is that for decades the electrical system has practically not changed. Only air conditioning was added to the main sensors, the light in the cabin and the stove. But the wagon computer or a system that measures the weight of the body is not provided even in the latest modifications.

• Located above the engine, it leans forward at an angle of 55 degrees. It is equipped with a hydraulic drive, the control of which is located under the grille.
• Inside the cabin Maz 5551 can comfortably accommodate two people. The large free space provides comfort of operation of the dump truck during the working day.
• Large rear-view mirrors, panoramic windshield provide excellent visibility.
• Drivers with medium and low growth note that the steering wheel is large and you have to constantly bend to it, but over time they get used to it. The steering column is adjustable in two planes.
• The lack of cushioning of the cabin does not affect the comfort of operation of the machine, as it constantly shakes. And if the driver's seat is equipped with springs, then the passenger has to feel all the irregularities of the road with his fifth point in full.
• The location of the handrails and footrests is worked out very competently, so it's easy to climb into the cabin.

The appearance of the MAZ 5551 periodically changes, mainly designers change the shape of the headlights, grille and cab, but there are no serious improvements, both outside and inside the dump truck. But most of the drivers surveyed do not consider this a disadvantage, comparing it with a workhorse that does not need to differ in exterior qualities in order to perform the work assigned to it well.
